E-PAN – A new and easy way to get your PAN

What is PAN?

E-PAN is an electronic system through which, all tax-related information for a person/company is recorded against a single PAN number. This acts as the primary key for the storage of information and is shared across the country. Hence no two tax-paying entities can have the same PAN (Permanent Account Number).

 

Why it is important to have a PAN card?

You are required to have a Permanent Account Number (PAN) for various purposes like filing income tax returns, opening a bank account, conducting financial transactions, and so on.

What is E-PAN?

E-PAN is an Instant PAN through Aadhaar based e-KYC. It is a digitally signed PAN card issued in electronic format by the I-T department.

The salient points of the facility for Instant PAN are:

  • The applicant should have a valid Aadhaar that is not linked to any other PAN.
  • The applicant should have his mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
  • This is a paperless process and applicants are not required to submit or upload any documents.
  • The applicant should not have another PAN. Possession of more than one PAN will result in a penalty.

How to apply for an E-PAN card (Instant PAN)?

To get an E-PAN card online, the applicant needs to have a valid Aadhaar number or digital signature. You can get the E-PAN card from the income tax department instantly. Hence, while earlier you were required to fill-up the form and submit documents to get a PAN card, with the introduction of E-PAN of it is possible to have the same at just one click.

 

An application can be made for E-PAN through the Government website. All you have to do is follow the simple steps as follows

Step1: Log on to the official website of Income Tax India E-filing.

Step2: Click on the “Instant PAN through Aadhaar” option.

Step4: Click the link “Get new PAN”

Step3: In Aadhar e-KYC, the applicant has to enter the details as registered in the Aadhar card and the Number.

Step4: Once, the Aadhar number is entered, an OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. (Make sure the Aadhar is updated with the mobile number).

Step5: The applicant has to upload a scanned copy of the signature on white paper.

Step6: Once all the details are entered correctly, the applicant will receive a 15 digit acknowledgment number (This can be used in the future to check the status).

How to download PAN?

  • To download PAN, please go to the e-Filing website of the Income-tax Department.
  • Click the link- ‘Instant PAN through Aadhaar’.
  • Click the link- ‘Check Status of PAN’.
  • Submit the Aadhaar number in the space provided, then submit the OTP sent to the Aadhaar registered mobile number.
  • Check the status of the application- whether PAN is allotted or not.
  • If PAN is allotted, click on the download link to get a copy of the e-PAN pdf.

How to use E-PAN?

You can take a printout of the E-PAN for use.

Important

  • E-PAN is generated using the details of the information available in the Aadhaar database. However, one has to upload an image of one’s signature and a recent photograph in the prescribed format.
  • Applicants do not need to provide any supporting documents such as date of birth and address proofs. 
  • While making the application, the applicant has the option to choose whether he/she wants both a physical PAN card and an e-PAN or just an ePAN.
