How to Surrender or Cancel Your TAN?
Introduction
If you are a taxpayer and have obtained a TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) through the NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited), there might come a time when you need to surrender or cancel your TAN. Whether you have ceased business operations, consolidated your accounts, or no longer require the TAN for any other reason, it is important to understand the process of surrendering or canceling your TAN. In this article, we will guide you through the steps involved in surrendering your TAN number online and provide insights into the cancellation of a TAN application. By following these procedures, you can ensure that your TAN is effectively surrendered or canceled, streamlining your taxation processes and avoiding any unnecessary complications.
What is the TAN application?
The TAN application refers to the process of applying for a TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number). TAN is a unique alphanumeric code issued by the NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) or UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited) in India. It is a ten-digit number required for various tax-related transactions, particularly for deducting and remitting tax deducted at source (TDS).
What are the reasons for Cancelling a TAN application?
There are two situations in which a TAN may be canceled or surrendered:
Situation 1: When a duplicate TAN is issued
In situation 1, the Deductor must contact the NSDL to request that the “Duplicate-Unused TAN” be canceled. The ‘Changes & Correction to the TAN Application Form must be used for this. As well as being available for download through the NSDL website, the same is also available through TIN-FCs and other suppliers. Both an online application and a paper application form are accepted. The “Duplicate TAN” can be terminated with this.
Situation 2: When the Assessee/Deductor no longer needs the TAN that was allocated.
In situation 2, the deductor must send a written request for the cancellation of the TAN along with supporting documentation to the jurisdictional A.O. (TDS) on plain paper.
