All you need to know about Challan Status Inquiry

Introduction

Challan or chalan is a common Hindi word that has evolved into an official Indian English technical term used in many professions, particularly financial activities. It typically refers to a formal document, such as an official form, acknowledgement receipt, or another type of proof document, paperwork, a police citation, etc. Taxpayers have two options for tracking the status of their challan deposits: Challan Identification Number(CIN)-based view and TAN-based view. 6. What is the CIN Number (Challan Identification Number)?

The Challan Identification Number (CIN) is both, evidence of tax payment and an essential resource for Challan Status inquiries. The taxpayer must make sure the bank has stamped the challan with the CIN.

7. Why is the Challan Identification Number (CIN) important?

The three components of the Challan Identification Number (CIN)

  • BSR code with seven digits for the bank branch where taxes are deposited.

  • Tax Deposit Date (DD/MM/YY)

  • Serial Number of Challan

The CIN must be mentioned in the Income Tax Return as proof of payment. In any additional Challan Status inquiries, CIN must also be mentioned. Therefore, you must make sure the bank stamps the Challan with CIN (which includes the above three sections). If not, get in touch with the bank manager once and obtain CIN.

All tax-collecting bank branches are required by an instruction from the Reserve Bank of India dated April 1, 2004, to use a rubber stamp acknowledgement that includes a CIN. For each challan that is deposited, a unique CIN is provided. You should file a complaint with the Regional Manager of the Bank and the Regional Office of the Reserve Bank of India if the Bank Manager is unable to fix the problem.
