  • What is TAN?

    TAN stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. It is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department. Any entity deducting or collecting TDS must quote TAN in all TDS challans, returns, and certificates.

  • Who needs a TAN?

    Every company, firm, or individual responsible for deducting or collecting TDS needs a TAN. This includes employers deducting TDS on salaries, banks deducting on interest, or businesses deducting on contract payments.

  • Can I use PAN instead of TAN for TDS?

    No. PAN and TAN serve different purposes. PAN is for tracking income tax of an individual or business, while TAN is mandatory for deducting and depositing TDS. Without TAN, TDS returns cannot be filed.

  • How do I apply for a TAN?

    TAN is applied by filing Form 49B either online through NSDL’s portal or offline at TIN-FC centers. Once processed, the Income Tax Department allots the TAN and issues an allotment letter.

  • Is TAN required for filing TDS returns?

    Yes. Every TDS return filed quarterly must mention the correct TAN. Returns without a valid TAN will be rejected by the Income Tax Department.

  • How long does TAN allotment take?

    If applied online with proper documents, TAN is usually allotted within 5–7 working days. Offline applications may take slightly longer depending on verification.

  • What is the penalty for not having a TAN?

    As per section 272BB of the Income Tax Act, failure to apply for TAN can attract a penalty of ₹10,000. Additionally, filing TDS returns without TAN will not be accepted.

  • Can I apply for TAN online?

    Yes, TAN application can be filed online through the NSDL portal. After online filing, signed acknowledgment must be submitted to NSDL for processing.

  • Is a separate TAN needed for each branch of a company?

    Yes. If a company has multiple branches and each deducts TDS separately, then each branch must obtain its own TAN.

  • Does TAN expire?

    No. Once allotted, TAN remains valid for the lifetime of the entity. There is no need to renew or reapply unless details change.

  • Can TAN details be changed after allotment?

    Yes. Any change in address, name, or contact details can be updated by filing a TAN correction form with NSDL or at TIN-FC centers.

  • Is TAN required by all employers?

    Yes. Any employer who deducts TDS from employee salaries must apply for and use a valid TAN for depositing and reporting TDS.

  • What if I lose my TAN allotment letter?

    You can request a duplicate TAN allotment letter from NSDL by submitting a formal request. The TAN itself remains valid and does not change.

  • Do freelancers or professionals need TAN?

    Not always. Freelancers or professionals need TAN only if they are deducting TDS while making payments to vendors, employees, or contractors.

  • Can TAN and PAN be linked?
