What are the reasons for Cancelling a TAN application?

There are two situations in which a TAN may be canceled or surrendered:

Situation 1: When a duplicate TAN is issued

In situation 1, the Deductor must contact the NSDL to request that the “Duplicate-Unused TAN” be canceled. The ‘Changes & Correction to the TAN Application Form must be used for this. As well as being available for download through the NSDL website, the same is also available through TIN-FCs and other suppliers. Both an online application and a paper application form are accepted. The “Duplicate TAN” can be terminated with this.

Situation 2: When the Assessee/Deductor no longer needs the TAN that was allocated.

In situation 2, the deductor must send a written request for the cancellation of the TAN along with supporting documentation to the jurisdictional A.O. (TDS) on plain paper.

How to Surrender or Cancel Your TAN?

  1. Review the Guidelines:

Before proceeding with the surrender or cancellation of your TAN, it’s essential to review the guidelines provided by the Income Tax Department. Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements and procedures to ensure compliance and avoid any potential penalties or legal issues.
