Union Budget 2026-27 – Key updates

Union Budget 2026: New Updates and Highlights in Simple Language

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026–27 in Parliament on 1 February 2026, marking her ninth consecutive budget presentation.

The Budget was tabled shortly after the Economic Survey 2026, which projected India’s economic growth at around 7.4% for FY 2025–26 and between 6.8% to 7.2% for FY 2026–27. These projections are based on stable macroeconomic conditions, continued reforms, and a steady recovery in investment and consumption.

Union Budget 2026 is framed at a time when India is balancing global economic uncertainty with domestic growth ambitions. The Finance Minister positioned this Budget around the long-term vision of Viksit Bharat, with a focus on building economic strength through sustained public investment, private sector participation, and policy stability. Rather than short-term relief measures, the Budget places emphasis on strengthening foundations such as infrastructure, manufacturing capacity, services growth, and employment generation.

A key theme running through the Budget is investment-led development. The government has continued its strong push on capital expenditure, especially in areas like transport infrastructure, logistics, and urban development, to support long-term growth and job creation.

Alongside this, the Budget highlights the role of domestic manufacturing, technology-led sectors, and MSMEs in driving economic resilience and reducing dependency on imports.

From a policy perspective, the Budget also reinforces fiscal discipline and the ease of doing business. While personal income tax slabs remain unchanged, the Finance Minister reiterated the move towards a simpler and more modern tax framework, with the new Income Tax law scheduled to come into effect from 1 April 2026.

Overall, the Union Budget 2026 seeks to provide stability, clarity, and direction for businesses, investors, and citizens while laying the groundwork for sustained and inclusive economic growth in the years ahead.
