How to Cancel GST Registration in India- Quick and Easy Guide

What is GST Cancellation?

Cancellation of GST registration in India simply means that the taxpayer will not be a GST registered person anymore. The taxpayer will neither have to pay/collect GST nor file any GST Return with The GST Department.

Who can cancel GST Registration?

  • The registered person himself
  • A GST officer
  • The legal heir of the registered person through an application, in case of death of the registered person
  • The people who have applied for voluntary registrations can request for cancellation of registration even before the expiry of one year from the date of GST Registration.

When should you cancel your GST Registration?

  • If your turnover is not more than 20 lakh (now Rs. 40 Lakh w.e.f 01st April 2019) and you have registered voluntarily but you do not want to file the return.
  • If your business has been closed
  • If the business has been sold or transferred to some other party. That other party needs to register under GST.
  • If you are no longer liable for GST registration.
  • Change in constitution of business leading to change in PAN.
  • If you Registered for GST voluntarily but did not commence any business within the specified time.

Before applying for GST Registration Cancellation ensure that you have paid all the dues and taxes and filed all the pending returns with the GST Department.
