FAQs on Challan Status Inquiry (CSI)

All you need to know about Challan Status Inquiry

Introduction

Challan or chalan is a common Hindi word that has evolved into an official Indian English technical term used in many professions, particularly financial activities. It typically refers to a formal document, such as an official form, acknowledgement receipt, or another type of proof document, paperwork, a police citation, etc. Taxpayers have two options for tracking the status of their challan deposits: Challan Identification Number(CIN)-based view and TAN-based view. The “e-Pay Tax” function on the e-Filing portal makes the challan for payments made through the NSDL portal. This article will resolve all your questions regarding Challan Status Inquiry (CSI).

FAQs on Challan Status Inquiry

1. What is a Challan Status Inquiry?

The Tax Information Network (TIN) provides the option for taxpayers to check the status of their challans online. They can confirm that your tax payment has been correctly accounted in your name.

2. Can I download a CSI file using “e-Pay Tax” and have access to the challan for payments made through the NSDL portal?

Yes, the “e-Pay Tax” function on the e-Filing portal makes the challan for payments made through the NSDL portal also available in CSI files that may be downloaded. However, NSDL Payment challan receipts will not be accessible for download.

3. Can I get the CSI (Challan Status Inquiry) file by filtering challans on Assessment Year or Payment Type?

You can only get the CSI file by filtering challans paid over a certain period (From -to-To date) not exceeding 24 months. You cannot download the CSI file by filtering challans based on the Assessment Year or Type of Payment.

4. Who can download CSI (Challan Status Inquiry) file?

Only Tax Application Number users can download a CSI file with TAN as the user ID.

5. How can I download the file for the CSI (Challan Status Inquiry)?

You can Download the CSI file by the steps given below :

Step 1. Use TAN (Tax Collection Account Number) as your User ID to log into the e-Filing portal.

Step 2. Access the e-File >> e-Pay Tax Service page.

Step 3. Select the Payment History tab from the e-Pay Tax page.

Step 4. Select Filter from the menu.

Step 5. In the Filter options, choose Payment date range (From to To).

Step 6. You can click the download CSI file button once it has been enabled.

6. What is the CIN Number (Challan Identification Number)?

The Challan Identification Number (CIN) is both, evidence of tax payment and an essential resource for Challan Status inquiries. The taxpayer must make sure the bank has stamped the challan with the CIN.

7. Why is the Challan Identification Number (CIN) important?

The three components of the Challan Identification Number (CIN)

  • BSR code with seven digits for the bank branch where taxes are deposited.

  • Tax Deposit Date (DD/MM/YY)

  • Serial Number of Challan

The CIN must be mentioned in the Income Tax Return as proof of payment. In any additional Challan Status inquiries, CIN must also be mentioned. Therefore, you must make sure the bank stamps the Challan with CIN (which includes the above three sections). If not, get in touch with the bank manager once and obtain CIN.

All tax-collecting bank branches are required by an instruction from the Reserve Bank of India dated April 1, 2004, to use a rubber stamp acknowledgement that includes a CIN. For each challan that is deposited, a unique CIN is provided. You should file a complaint with the Regional Manager of the Bank and the Regional Office of the Reserve Bank of India if the Bank Manager is unable to fix the problem.
